HIGH-MOBILITY AMBIPOLAR NEAR-INFRARED LIGHT-EMITTING POLYMER FIELD-EFFECT TRANSISTORS |
A new polymer semiconductor, poly(3,6-bis(4'-dodecyl-(2,2')bithiophenyl-5-yl)-2,5-bis(2-hexyldecyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo(3,4-)pyrrole-1,4-dione)(BBTDPP1), with ambipolar charge transport properties was prepared. Ambipolar field-effect transistors based on this material exhibited hole and electron mobilities of 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and up to 0.09 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively. These values were larger by an order of magnitude than the highest ones previously reported for solution-processed ambipolar transistors. Ambipolarity in this material was not limited to one particular transistor architecture, but was observed in five different configurations, including transistors with solution-processed gate dielectrics in bottom-gate as well as top-gate structure. When driven under appropriate bias conditions, the ambipolar BBTDPPI transistors emitted near-IR light. 31 refs.

THE BUILT-IN POTENTIAL IN BLUE POLYFLUORENE-BASED LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES |
An investigation was carried out into energy level alignment in polyfluorene-based polymer light-emitting diodes using electroabsorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The polyfluorenes employed were poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) and copolymers thereof with N-(4-butylphenyl)-diphenylamine and bis-N,N'-(4-butylphenyl)-bis-N,N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine. By using an active layer containing a blend of three polyfluorenes, it was established that the built-in potential values were determined by the interplay of the contacts work function and the lowest and highest energy levels of the blend components. 33 refs.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SPIROBIFLUORENE-BASED POLYMERS FOR ORGANIC LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE APPLICATIONS |
A series of blue electroluminescent spirobifluorene-based polymers was synthesised by means of the Suzuki polymerisation method and characterised by NMR spectroscopy, GPC, solubility measurements, DSC and thermogravimetry. The electroluminescence properties of the polymers were investigated and the performance of polymer light-emitting diodes fabricated using the polymers as emitting layers evaluated. 14 refs.

DESIGN OF HOLE BLOCKING LAYER WITH ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHANNELS FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE POLYMER LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES |
The fabrication by the co-injection resin transfer moulding process of sandwich panels based on a nanocomposite polyurethane foam containing various proportions of a commercially available nanoclay as core and three-layered plain weave carbon fabric-reinforced epoxy resin composite containing various proportions of nanoclay filler as face sheets is described. The effects of nanoclay content of the foam cores on the impact properties of the sandwich panels were investigated by impact testing with examination of failure patterns by optical microscopy and SEM, and the results are discussed in terms of potential applications. 26 refs.

SYNTHESIS AND PROPERTIES OF A NOVEL BRUSH-TYPE COPOLYMER BEARING THIOPHENE BACKBONE AND 3-(N-CARBAZOLYL)PROPYL ACRYLATE SIDE CHAINS FOR LIGHT-EMITTING APPLICATIONS |
A novel light-emitting and hole transporting copolymer, 2,5-poly(3-(1-ethyl-2-(2-(poly(3-(N-carbazolyl)propyl acrylate))propionate)thiophene), was synthesised by atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) of a 3-(N-carbazolyl)propylacrylate initiated with a macroinitiator with ATRP initiating sites distributed along the polythiophene backbone. The copolymer was characterised by GPC, NMR spectroscopy and DSC and its optical properties investigated by UV vis spectroscopy and fluorescence analysis. The energy transfer process and electrochemical properties of the copolymer were also investigated and the performance of single- and double- layered polymer light emitting diodes fabricated therefrom evaluated. 33 refs.

ORGANOMETALLIC POLYMER LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES DERIVED FROM A PLATINUM(II) POLYYNE CONTAINING THE BITHIAZOLE RING |
The synthesis of novel platinum metallopolyynes containing the bithiazole ring, and their characterisation by proton, carbon-13 and phosphorus-31 NMR, FTIR, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, GPC, DTA and cyclic voltammetry, is described. The photoluminescence, electroluminescence and current-voltage characteristics of multi-layer polymer light-emitting diodes fabricated with a spin-coated layer of the metallopolymer as emitting layer were investigated and the results are discussed in terms of the optical bandgap. 34 refs.
